INRIX Triples Real-Time Traffic Flow Coverage in North America to Over 160,000 Miles

Expanded traffic data coverage spans 126 metropolitan areas reaching
over 250 million people in the U.S. and Canada

INRIX today announced that it has nearly tripled its coverage of real-time traffic information from 55,000 miles to over 160,000 miles across North America during peak commute hours. As part of the expansion, INRIX has extended its coverage in Canada to include Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto, and Ottawa and now delivers real-time traffic-flow data to over 250 million people across 126 metropolitan North American markets.

Leveraging real-time GPS reports from over one million commercial and consumer vehicles and devices, INRIX delivers the broadest and most accurate traffic information on freeways, highways, interstates and major arterial roads. The expanded real-time flow data is now available to INRIX customers and partners via INRIX Connected Services.

“Our unique collaborative approach with GPS data suppliers and our crowd-sourced data fusion technologies allow INRIX to accelerate additional road coverage of real-time traffic information while maintaining an exceptionally high degree of data quality,” said Bryan Mistele, INRIX president and CEO. “By continuously improving overall data accuracy, we help our customers deliver intelligent routing decisions that save time, fuel and vehicle wear and tear.”

Why this announcement is important:

1. INRIX continues to provide the broadest real-time traffic flow coverage. While other traffic information providers use a mix of historical and real-time data in an attempt to simulate real-time nationwide traffic coverage, INRIX provides true nationwide real-time information by blending real-time road sensor data with billions of real-time data points from GPS-enabled commercial and consumer devices in taxis, service vehicles, airport shuttle services, cars and long haul trucks.

2. INRIX technical innovations and pioneering collaborations with commercial fleet management companies, consumer device OEMs, and location-based service developers are driving the increased coverage. INRIX's collaborative approach to GPS-enabled probe vehicle data has resulted in increasing the “speed vector” information reporting frequency from individual devices and vehicles, along with other initiatives that improve the overall accuracy of every report containing the vehicle’s speed, location, heading, ignition status and other variables. This unique approach has enabled INRIX to achieve the highest level of true real-time flow coverage in the industry.

3. INRIX's commitment to quality ensures our customers' confidence in the high quality of INRIX traffic information. INRIX recently published Benchmarking Traffic Data Quality: Best Practices for Analyzing the Quality of Traffic Information. Designed for automobile OEMs, transportation agencies, wireless carriers and developers of location-based services to showcase best practices, metrics and INRIX thought leadership on the important topic of traffic data quality. The report describes the processes and methods INRIX uses to validate, measure and verify the quality of incoming traffic reporting data. In addition, it outlines best practices for the planning and execution of ground truth testing of traffic flow data, including the results of tests conducted by INRIX and its partner, Clear Channel Total Traffic Network, and an executive summary of the recent I-95 Corridor Coalition quality validation.

Commutes Speed Up as Fewer Drive
In a Mixed Blessing, Rising Unemployment Helps to Ease Congestion

By DOUGLAS BELKIN
April 28, 2009; Page A3

CHICAGO -- As unemployment rises and discretionary income shrinks, millions fewer Americans are driving. For commuters, that means some of the worst bottlenecks in the country are easing.

Americans drove 8.6 billion fewer miles in January and February than during the same months in 2008, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Mileage has been declining since the end of 2007.

Amer Suifan has driven a taxi here for 17 years, but said he has never zipped around the city this fast. He can make it from downtown to O'Hare International Airport during rush hour in 30 minutes; from Wrigley Field to Hyde Park after a Chicago Cubs game in just 22 minutes. "There's nobody on the roads," said the 43-year-old father of five. "Everywhere, it's empty."

Rush-hour congestion -- defined as moving slower than free-flowing traffic -- in the 100 largest U.S. metropolitan markets fell 29% in 2008 versus 2007, said Rick Schuman, a vice president at Inrix, a Washington company that measures traffic patterns. It fell an additional 7% in this year's first quarter....
