MapQuest Goes Live with INRIX Traffic-Enabled Navigation Solutions

INRIX traffic available today to more than 45 million monthly MapQuest.com users across over 100 cities
March 19, 2008 -- MapQuest and INRIX® today announced that consumers and businesses can now access the full breadth of INRIX traffic information across multiple MapQuest business units including MapQuest.com, MapQuest Wireless, and MapQuest Platform Services.

MapQuest has integrated INRIX’s real-time traffic speed and incident information on the leading mapping site in the U.S., MapQuest.com.  MapQuest.com users can now select a “Traffic” view which allows them to visualize traffic flow and incidents along major roadways in more than 100 US markets.
MapQuest uniquely has Real-time Traffic Flow Coverage in Miami

“Our extensive customer research shows that traffic is one of the most requested features from our users,” said Christian Dwyer, SVP and GM of MapQuest.  “After evaluating alternatives we decided to incorporate INRIX traffic across multiple MapQuest offerings to provide the best coverage and highest accuracy for trip planning and navigation.”

The integration of INRIX traffic allows users to take into account real time traffic information, whether planning personal travel or locating a favorite retail store, restaurant or other location on MapQuest.com, or on their mobile device using MapQuest Navigator.

“The tremendous growth and demand for accurate and reliable traffic information is revolutionizing the way customers get to the important places and events in their lives,” commented Bryan Mistele, president and CEO of INRIX.  “We are thrilled to partner with MapQuest, the clear leader in navigation solutions with nearly 45 million* monthly MapQuest.com users, to enrich the user experience with traffic-influenced navigation and driving directions.”

INRIX traffic is currently available to mobile consumers via MapQuest Navigator 5.0, the newest version of MapQuest’s voice-guided, GPS-enabled wireless application launched in November 2007.  Additional MapQuest implementations are planned throughout 2008.

MapQuest has also made available a toolbar featuring one-click access to real-time traffic information, automatically updated every five minutes.  Users who download the new toolbar will have instant access to the features they rely on from MapQuest.com, including finding places, directions and gas prices, no matter what site they’re browsing.

Why is this announcement important?

  • For the first time, consumers in the U.S. have traffic information available on the Web for 55,000 miles of roadways and over 100 metropolitan markets. This is 5X the roadway mileage available today on any other Web portal.
  • For the first time, consumers will be able to access the full breadth of INRIX real-time traffic for free on the Internet.  INRIX traffic content previously was only available on high-end portable navigation devices, automobiles and mobile devices.
  • With over 45 million unique visitors per month, MapQuest.com continues to be the leading U.S. mapping and navigation site on the Web. Adding INRIX Traffic will encourage frequent visits and support advertising and sponsorship opportunities.
  • The selection of INRIX by MapQuest after an exhaustive analysis is further market validation of the coverage and quality of INRIX Traffic. MapQuest joins over 45 industry-leading customers using INRIX content today.
  • MapQuest plans to roll out additional innovative INRIX traffic-enabled solutions leveraging the full suite of INRIX traffic information, including Historical and Predictive traffic information in the future.

New INRIX White Paper Available
Measuring the Accuracy of Traffic Flow Information

Best Practices in Ground Truth Testing Methodologies & Analysis

Where the rubber hits the road for real-time traffic information is in measuring its quality.  There are many difficulties associated with doing so, compounded by the distinction between the ‘out-of-the-window’ experience of a consumer or single vehicle and the average experience over extended components of space and time which traffic flow information is designed to reflect.  The most pronounced difficulty lies in the use of single or few vehicles to measure, or more realistically, corroborate the estimate of traffic flow conditions that a provider is transmitting.

At INRIX we subject our traffic data to a rigorous regime of testing, including:

  • Statistical tests in real-time of the estimated accuracy of every data value that we transmit.
  • Low vehicle count drive-testing of data quality in our major markets.
  • High vehicle density third-party drive-testing and competitive evaluation.
  • Testing of Real-Time, Predictive and Historical data products.

In this detailed whitepaper we describe considerations for the planning and execution of ground truth testing of traffic flow data, and describe INRIX-supported best-practices for ground truth testing, as a guide for customers and partners.

If you are considering any kind of ground truth testing, this white paper is a must read!
