INRIX® Nationwide Average Speeds
Example of average speeds on all major roads in the Chicago Metro on Wednesday at 5:00 P.M.
Whenever drivers need an accurate estimate of how long it will take to drive a specific route, or advice on which route to take to get there faster, INRIX’s Nationwide Average Speeds can do the job. Using comprehensive data from the INRIX Smart Dust Network, including billions of historical data points, this service provides true historical average speeds on individual road segments covering over 750,000 miles on major freeways, highways, urban and rural arterials and side streets throughout the United States. This data is specific to every day of the week, every hour of the day, and is reported at the Traffic Message Channel (TMC) link level or at the smallest road segment for Tele Atlas™ and NAVTEQ™ map databases.
Using INRIX’s proprietary technology, the data is analyzed and normalized to account for the impact of major events (such as sports games), seasonal traffic patterns, typical weather conditions and other variables that can impact traffic flow – ensuring the highest degree of accuracy. The data is updated quarterly, incorporating both changes to map databases as well as additional historical data from the INRIX Smart Dust Network.
With Nationwide Average Speeds, customers can:
- Improve the quality of navigation services through dynamic re-routing based on historical average road conditions, rather than calculating routes based on speed limit data alone
- Provide travel times and estimated speeds for routes anywhere in the United States, based on historical average road conditions
- Integrate with INRIX’s Real Time Traffic service to enhance coverage and accuracy
- Create traffic speed maps showing color-coded speeds and historical averages across all road segments, indicating whether congestion on a particular route is more or less than usual.
- Assess the historical performance of roadways for Department of Transportation planning
