Exceptional Accuracy
INRIX’s obsessive focus on quality is unparalleled in the traffic information industry. It starts with our unique approach to the aggregation of traffic-related data through the INRIX Smart Dust Network, leveraging over 250 public and private sources including traditional road sensors, the world’s largest network of GPS-probe vehicles, traffic incident and construction data.
The INRIX Traffic Fusion Engine then intelligently combines billions of traffic speed measurements and related traffic-related data sources and uses proprietary analytic techniques to identify and filter inconsistent measurements. The subject of multiple patents pending, the INRIX Traffic Fusion Engine is designed specifically to maximize data quality, employing the detection of malfunctioning traffic sensors, geospatial filtering, collaborative filtering and outlier detection, and the optimization of spatial granularity.
INRIX conducts ongoing ground truth test driving of its traffic services internationally, typically covering over 100,000 miles in any given six month period. INRIX has pioneering openness and discussion in the industry of methodology around the testing of real-time traffic information, recently including a webinar and whitepaper by Principal Scientist, Dr. Oliver Downs.
The quality of INRIX Traffic information is also validated through multiple independent ground truth studies by customers, third party research firms, and strategic partners including Clear Channel Total Traffic Network’s ongoing ground truth testing of INRIX data using rigorous testing standards defined by BMW R&D.
Additionally, at the request of key automotive and mobile navigation device OEMs and application companies, INRIX recently engaged a leading independent global marketing information firm to design and conduct a “Real-Time Traffic Field Assessment” study. The results of the March, 2007 proprietary study further validate INRIX’s leadership position in the traffic information industry.
The study compared real-time traffic speed data from INRIX’s Smart Dust Network against other traffic data providers in the areas of accuracy and market coverage. Ground truth testing research was conducted over a period of several weeks and featured over 60 independently planned routes in each of three major metropolitan areas – San Francisco, San Diego and Miami to emulate “day in the life of” scenarios of average working consumers.
The study concluded that INRIX Traffic:
- Enables a better customer experience in the tested markets by reporting accurate traffic flow on many more of the routes tested on major roads;
- Provides highly accurate and statistically comparable accuracy rates of traffic speed information; and
- Has significantly broader traffic flow information coverage in many more markets across the country
Additionally, the study provides further support that INRIX’s unique approach of utilizing GPS vehicle probe data blended with road sensor data where available is, in general, at least as accurate as road-sensor collected data. As a proof point, Miami had the highest accuracy of the markets tested, but has no physical road sensor data accessible to any private traffic data provider – traffic flow data in Miami is exclusively generated by INRIX through its GPS probe vehicle network.
